A. Oppressive regimes

Most Arab regimes had become bankrupt, both morally and ideologically.

By the time the 2011 Arab spring was happening, “Tunisia’s leader had been in
power since 1987, Egypt’s Hosni Mubarak since 1980, while Libya’s Muammar
al-Qaddafi had ruled for 42 years” (Dabashi, 2012).

Citizens of these nations became contemptuous of their old regimes.
B. Unemployment and poor living standards

Unemployment rates in the Arab world are extremely high.

Dissatisfaction over poor living standards and widespread unemployment led to
anti-government protests (Dabashi, 2012).

The anger of families striving to feed their children and university graduates
doing manual jobs to survive transcended ideological divisions

Citizens of a country can only tolerate economic hardships when there is hope for
a better future or when hardships are equally distributed.

State-led development in the Arab world gave place to capitalism, benefiting only
a small majority (Dabashi, 2012).

Business elites collaborated with the government to amass unimaginable fortunes
at the expense of the poor citizens.

➢ The anti-government revolts mandated a budget for implementation of the social media
moderation policy or law since the dissemination of the propaganda that influenced the
spread of the Arab Spring into various countries.
➢ The governments are obligated to provide adequate budget or funds during the
implementation of such policies.
➢ The cost of implementation of such a policy since social media moderation may be
conducted using computer technology, which is efficient and cheap.
➢ Every policy that is enacted government is aimed at creating a long-term impact in
addressing the issue at hand.
➢ The implementation of the social media moderation policy would be deemed sustainable
since the policy is less costly to implement, and also it would mitigate the spread of the
revolts, which would have a significant impact on both political, social, and economic
stability in the long run.
➢ It is believed that the social media facilitated the rapid spread of the Arab Springs since a
large population in the affected countries used mobile phones and utilized social media
platforms to spread the fever of these revolts (Wolfsfeld et al., 2013).
➢ Therefore, implementing the social media moderation strategy would create a sustainable
solution to the overarching problem.
➢ The moderation of social media and other platforms would be a concrete policy that
governments would take to improve the spread of harmful propaganda or unethical
politics in society.
