RUBRIC FOR CC-3Qs READING JOURNAL (30 points each)
(Each category is worth 6 points)
1. Core Content: The response demonstrates sufficient time (at least 2-3 hrs) reading/thinking about the
material. You develop themes/concepts from the readings in your own words (especially #1, but also #4)—and
poses relevant questions and points of possible clarification to the reading. If you utilize online or other
resources, you do so where appropriate to deepen context and understanding, not add peripheral, irrelevant
information. You present an adequate array of information, citation, and explanation to demonstrate mastery
of core content. Demonstrate thoughtful reflection in chosen quotation.

unless you and the professor have made arrangements for an extension (and these arrangements must be

Poor (1.5)
5. Criticality & Creativity. Beyond demonstrating sufficient work ethic (above), all 4 aspects of your response
demonstrate significant critical reflection of the reading material and creative thought, both in regard to the
existential or aesthetic value of the reading for the student’s own life experience, and in regard to its
application to contemporary issues, events, or concerns as well as other topics discussed in class. If possible,
your journal demonstrates continuity among the 4 criteria: e.g., your selected quote is not unrelated to other
aspects of this assignment—in other words, for example, in some way (e.g., in content, theme, or argument)
your quote relates to / reflects your stated articulation of the overarching thesis and/or your discussion
question and/or your quandary statement.
