Advertising not only affects the way we buy and consume products; it influences how
we think and form attitudes and opinions about social and political issues that are
critical in our society. Therefore, as consumers of advertising messages, we need to
have a true understanding of the role advertising plays.
Habits and routines can be a comfortable thing for many of us. However, to truly
experience the living cultures and society around us, we must regularly get out of
comfort zone.
This assignment has two parts.
Part One:

Select a country that starts with the same letter as your first name. You may not select
Canada or Mexico or USA. (The only exception is names that start with 0,W,X,Y. If your
first name begins with one of these letters, you get a wildcard and you can select any
country other than Canada, Mexico or USA.
From the website, select your country from the drop-down menu. Spend some time and review
the ads posted. Look across a variety of media (print, digital, outdoor, etc.). I recommend
keeping the specific industries option to all as you begin. However, you can certainly narrow
down to draw conclusions.
What are your initial thoughts? How are these ads the same as what you see here in the USA?
How are they different? Be specific. (Think about imagery, color, design, messaging, etc.)
Next, let’s move on to the culture and society of your selected country. What hints do your ads
tell you about their culture? Be specific.
Finally – be able to tell us a little about your selected country. Where is it located? What
continent? What are they best known for? Something of interest that is noteworthy or fun to
share? Just a note – Wikipedia is a good starting point for this preliminary information dig, but
please go deeper to learn more about your country.
Please prepare an analysis / report providing the necessary information to explain your
selected country to someone that has never been there. What sort of information
would they need to best understand the country and how the advertising both creates
and reflects the overall culture and society there. Be careful to not plagiarize and copy
information online. Rather, do your own research and then present the findings as part
of this report.
Part One should be 3-4 pages.
Part Two:
Shape vs Mirror Debate
Now it’s your turn to provide an answer (and examples to justify and support your
reasoning) to THE question posed earlier this semester….
Does advertising create the world in which we live?
or…
Does advertising reflect the world in which we live?
or…
Does it do a little bit of both?
You will need to provide a minimum of two examples to support your perspective. Be
sure to adequately explain your rationale and reasoning, including how and why.
NOTE: If you believe with the “both” statement, be sure to adequately explain all sides
of the question.
Please be sure include specific images and examples (and links) to help support and
validate your perspective.
Part two should be 1-2 pages.
Overall your submission should be double-spaced and a TOTAL of 4-6 pages.
