Leadership Style, Skill, and Vision
What is being a leader all about? There is so much more to being a leader than being able to take charge. It has been said
that leaders possess distinguishing traits, as well as hone or develop the ability to lead (Northouse, 2018). The gateways that
leaders can create are influential to those who are under them, so it’s imperative that they understand their leadership styles, what
skills they possess, and what their vision is. American entrepreneur, Robert Johnson, is a prime example of what a leader is all
about. Being one of ten children, the only one to earn a bachelor from the University of Illinois, and a masters from Princeton,
and working his way up from the belly of the TV industry, is obvious evidence in his natural ability to excel.
His authentic leadership approach, and desire to be successful helped him become the first African American to achieve a
net worth of more than $1 billion dollars (Lee, 2019). With all of Johnson’s accomplishments, it is evident that his ability
dimension allows him to take the reins as a leader. With great success also comes trying adversities. In his cable companies’
efforts to reach one hundred twenty-five thousand black households, the problem of combatting racial discrimination and
advertising emerged (Encyclopedia, 2020).
Investors weren’t sure what his upcoming network, Black Entertainment Television (BET) was all about, causing concern
to contribute. Johnson used his leadership skills developed from time and experience, to create and carry out his plan of attack.
Taking a leap of faith, he signed a million-dollar joint advertising pact, that assisted in breaking barriers as a team, which later
landed him a marketing campaign with a major network. Responsively, BET was able to overcome the hardship due to the new
interest of expanding and reaching black audiences and Johnson’s confidence in integration.
How leaders conduct business, and operate can influence the individuals that work for them. Whatever behaviors are displayed as
a leader, contribute to one’s leadership style (Northouse, 2018).
The leadership style exhibited by this person is a democratic one. This style of leadership is participative in which he is
seen in place executing. Typically, this is the most effective style that he embraced. Democratic leaders, just like Robert L.
Johnson, offer guidance to various members of the groups in which they are in charge. Additionally, democratic leaders
participate in group activities and allow input from the rest of the group members. Members of the group can be less productive
than in an authoritarian case, although their contribution can obviously be of the highest quality. Participative leaders provide
words of encouragement to members who are provoked to participate, but the leaders will always have the final decision to make
in the entire process. Members get engaged in the decision-making process and get not only motivated but also creative. These
kinds of leaders make so many followers who end up feeling like vital members of the tea. This helps in fostering the
commitments objectives of the team.
In the case of Robert L. Johnson, he was brought up in a family of ten in which he learned to share things, including ideas
that he was also trying to do. He was in a better position to interact with other people in the large family and with his workers. He
had his belief in trusting people who, in return, felt more confident and empowered in doing different things. He was never afraid
of people who always advised him since he was tolerant enough to accommodate different people’s advice. Twice, Johnson
worked for other people. First, his job was that of a paper route in Freeport, which was his hometown. Johnson hated the idea of
getting up very early in the morning and irritated by the duping papers. He later worked in a battery factory where he often swept
black pitch from below the conveyor belt (Ho, 2019). Since he saw this as a waste of time, he kept working with young women
before they parted ways with his supervisor despite having exhibited the leadership skills.
Additionally, his democratic and participative leadership style was when he held that it was always easy for him
because he often preferred the disclosure approach in other people. He gave an active ear to creating comfortable relationships,
thus realizing their primary concerns and relationships. This strengthened his relationship with all people he worked with since
lines of communication were open, unfiltered, and frank most of the time. He also had the strength to generate access to capital
and draw young and talented people who worked with him in different new ventures. His excellent visibility attracted people who
had lucrative deals and ideas to offer as he kept pointing them out.
Emotional intelligence involves understanding and managing your emotions, besides recognizing and influencing those
around your emotions. In one way or another, the most influential leaders are similar. They possess a high level of what is
commonly referred to as emotional intelligence. This does not make technical skills and IQ irrelevant since they matter, although
they are the level of entry requirements for any executive position. Organizational leaders and executives have always exhibited
analytical skills, business savvy, vision, and experience, just like Johnson. He was able to control, comprehend, and develop his
feelings while he managed and understood his workers’ feelings in BET. Emotional intelligence traverses administrative nuts and
bolts in terms of being a great leader. It emphasizes ways in which a leader’s emotions affect other people and how best the leader
can employ the same knowledge in creating positive outcomes at an individual and with the people the leader is managing (Azam
& Nasir, 2019). Emotional intelligence encompasses self-awareness, which is understanding oneself, and empathy, which is
understanding what other people are feeling. High emotional intelligence is increasingly being considered an essential tool in
organizations due to society’s growing complexity and the wide range of stakeholders who need effective communication.
Emotional intelligence helps leaders become better since it creates internal awareness. Making important decisions calls
for an understanding of your feelings’ effect on judgments, attitudes, and productivity. Influential leaders are self-aware of their
emotions, limitations, strengths, and weaknesses. Another importance is that it leads to collaborative communication. Since they
comprehend their workers, emotionally intelligent leaders honestly speak up with sincerity. Also, there is better team
engagement. Emotional intelligence helps in acknowledging the dynamics of the team as well as giving every member a voice.
This, in itself, leads to better results that are driven with high performance (Tobin, 2019). Trusted employees who feel that their
emotions are valued are subjected to unfiltered leaders’ emotions perform better and are more productive and ultimately improve.
A leader needs to follow and communicate a vision and set a note. Firstly, the leader sets an example to be followed. The
minimum behavior of a leader will affect the maximum performance of his team (Kohler, 2016). If the leader expects his workers
to be on time, he must set an example by being on time. If the leader needs the workers to wear safety equipment, he must lead
by wearing the same safety equipment. This is just like in the case of the case where children have the tendency to follow their
parents. The team follows the cue of its leader. Another importance is that the mood is quickly established. It is in the know that
attitude is infectious. Irrespective of how the leader becomes optimistic and upbeat around his group. The leader must be
empathetic when dealing with serious issues, but the leader is always in good spirits and upbeat hence making the team
demonstrate the same. As the leader takes charge of the group, he needs to communicate the vision of the organization all the
time. Members of the group always look forward to their leaders for inspiration and keeping them in the right direction. Clear and
enthusiastic leaders in terms of their direction help members of their team follow their lead.
