ASSIGNMENT:
This interdisciplinary capstone core course focuses on how to create, identify and manage
competitive advantage within an organization. Each student will be required to prepare a
professional report that provides a detailed and thorough strategic analysis of a corporation
chosen by the student. The term professional means that it is well written, well sourced and
analytical.
The report will be graded on its effective use of strategic management concepts and shall
constitute forty percent (10% + 30% = 40%) of a student’s final grade. The purpose of the
assignment is to provide the student the opportunity to demonstrate an understanding of the
process of strategy development and analysis, rather than complete a detailed task list for the
assignment. The strategic plan analysis should be no more than thirty (30) pages.
As you will see in the course material, the project is divided into two components: A) an
‘External/Environmental Analysis’ of the firm and B) an ‘Internal Analysis,’ Strategic Analysis’
and set of recommended strategic actions for the firm. Part A, the Environmental Analysis
(outline sections I and II below) is due week 4 and Part B, the Internal Analysis, etc. (outline
sections III through VII below) is due at the end of week 8. Combined, they will make-up a
complete strategic analysis.
Please remember that a Strategic Analysis such as this is an assessment of the organization’s
preparedness for the future and NOT a description of its past or present!
COMPONENTS OF STRATEGIC PLAN ANALYSIS
The strategic analysis structure is outlined below and shall include the following:

Executive Summary
a. Industry – history/description.
b. Leading Companies in the Industry (2) – their history/background; strategic
leadership, vision, mission.
c. Your Company – brief description, history, position in industry.

External Environment Analysis
a. General Environment – Trends/Factors of Technology, Demographic, Economic,
Political/Legal, Socio-cultural and Global.
b. Industry Environment –Porter’ Five Force and a Strategic Group Map.
c. Competitor Environment – Future Objectives, Current Strategies, Assumptions,
Capabilities.
d. Include within the external environment analysis Driving Forces and Key Success
Factors.
III.
Internal Environment Analysis
a. The Organization’s Resources, Capabilities, Core Competencies, Distinctive
Competencies (or Competitive Advantages: determine using the Four Criteria
Test), and Supply and Distribution Chains should be addressed.
b. Financials – Key business financial strength statistics (e.g. liquidity); identify any
significant trends (5 year; include competitor figures where relevant).
c. Note: The concepts of Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats should
be addressed somewhere in the paper, but not necessarily as a SWOT chart. Just
recall that a SWOT analysis, by itself, only discusses the current state of the
organization and is not representative of a ‘strategy’ (although it may relate to
the effectiveness of the current strategy; see Section IV. below).
IV.
Strategic Analysis
a. Identify and assess the current competitive strategy of the organization and the
conditions that created that strategy (internal and/or external). Note: Be sure to
identify which of Porter’s Generic Strategies appears to be predominant at the
firm.
b. Identify any changes in strategy that the organization has experienced (including
any changes in the scope of operations, vertical or horizontal expansion, and
approach to the global economy).
V.
Final Report Analysis & Recommendations
a. TOWS Analysis (See documentation in the Week 5 material).
b. Strategy Recommendations (You will also be asked to provide a 5-minute selfrecorded video presentation of these recommendations).
