Quantitative Research: Al-Anon
Research Question
Does speaking and communicating with an Al-Anon sponsor at least 15 minutes per
week for three months improve life satisfaction measured by The Satisfaction with Life
Scale (SLS) and positive emotions measured by the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule
(PANAS) of the Al-Anon member?
Background, Purpose, and Significance of the Study
Al-Anon groups consist of individuals whose friends or family members suffer from
alcohol addiction. In most cases, family members’ addictive disorder negatively affects their kin
and results in excessive worry and even depression (Timko et al., 2015). Thus, participating in
the Al-Anon meetings help the members cope and receive the spiritual support to overcome the
stress of experiencing their loved ones suffer from alcohol attachment (Timko et al., 2016).
Moreover, the Al-Anon members meet regularly to share their experiences and comfort one
another, hoping that they would one day conquer the stress, anxiety, and chaos when their
addicted friends and family members are in their alcohol and drug dependence.
The Al-Anon 12-step program effectively helps the members gain spiritual healing from
the stress and depression of worrying about alcoholic family members. The 12-step initiative is
part of a spiritual fellowship where the Al-Anon members share their experience, strength, and
hope to cope with alcoholics (Kuuluvainen, 2016). Besides, the Al-Anon beliefs emphasize that
solution is with a change of attitude and a Higher Power.

Many who are not familiar with the 12-step groups of Alanon assume they meet to
complain together about the misery and the hurdle the alcoholic or addict caused to their lives.
This assumption prevents many from coming and find the help, support, and solution in the AlAnon program.
Many individuals arrive at Al-Anon because of the alcoholics or addicts in their lives and
stay for their benefits. They discover that their lives have changed on a deeper level as they learn
to cope with other embedded stressors; some are not even connected to alcoholism. The trust
built with a sponsor, and Al-Anon member who shares experience, strength, and hope, build the
confidence the newcomers did not have. Slowly, connecting to a sponsor which the member
chooses and communicating with them regularly, and going through the process of the 12-steps,
the new member learns to trust, tools to cope with anxiety and stress and finds a meaningful
moment in their lives, as the worry is reduced.
Therefore, the purpose of this study is to establish whether the Al-Anon members not
only could experience reduced worries and become less obsessed with the alcoholism of their
family members but creating well-being and satisfaction from their own lives. The research’s
significance is to show how participating in Al-Anon programs helps individuals improve the
well-being, including life satisfaction and positive emotions.
Variables in the Study
The main variables in the study are life satisfaction and emotions. These variables will
show the extent to which an Al-Anon member becomes contented with their new way of living.
To measure these variables, the participants will receive pre-test surveys at the beginning of the
4
research and a post-test survey at the end of the program. Comparing the two surveys’ results
will show improved life satisfaction and positive emotions after the three months.
Independent Variables in the Study
The independent variable in the study is emotions. The research will evaluate how
speaking with an Al-Anon sponsor will manipulate the emotions of an individual to improve
their life satisfaction.
Potential Validity Issues
The potential threat to internal validity includes spending more time speaking with the
sponsors if the threshold time is set to 15 minutes. This example is part of validity to
measurement since there will be inconsistent measures in the time spent by each participant
affecting the overall results. Additionally, the potential threat to external validity is that the
research findings may become limited to individuals who participate in three-month 12-step
programs with limited interaction time of 15 minutes with their sponsors. Hence, one cannot
replicate the study to populations engaged in long-term 12-step initiatives.
Data Collection
The data collection for the study will utilize surveys during the pre-test and post-test
measurements. The five-item Satisfaction with Life Scale will assess the respondents’ level of
life satisfaction before and after the three months (Diener et al., 1985). I will also use the Positive
and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) to measure the participants’ emotions and evaluate
whether the engagement period resulted in positive emotions (Seib-Pfeifer et al., 2017). I will
provide an online chart where I can view live rows representing the 12 weeks the respondents
4
spoke with the sponsors, recording their engagement minutes. This approach will also help
collect info about their participation in the initiative.
Research Design
A non-experimental research design will help evaluate whether there will be an
improvement in life satisfaction among the participants between the beginning and end of the
survey. Since the measurement tools will utilize the Likert scale in the different measures, a
descriptive analysis will become useful for the study. Likewise, the descriptive analysis will
indicate whether there will be an improvement in the respondents’ positive emotions (Doyle et
al., 2020). Comparing the mean and standard deviation of the response items will determine
whether there are improved life satisfaction and positive emotions at the end of the research.
