For this first analysis paper, students are to choose any film they wish, watch it in its entirety and
choose ONE pivotal scene in the film to analyze. The scene should be anywhere from two-tofive-minutes in length. Longer scenes can be very challenging to analyze in a short paper such as
this, so choose wisely. Remember that you do not necessarily have to choose a film you like.
Instead, choose a film that you are passionate about in order to fuel your writing.
Here are the basic requirements for the assignment:
1.) Analysis paper must be submitted in .doc, .docx, or .pdf format and accessible:
Other formats (.odt, .dotx, Google Docs, are just a few examples) will NOT be accepted
and will earn a ZERO for the assignment. Analysis paper documents that are corrupted or
otherwise inaccessible will also receive a ZERO for the assignment.
2.) Analysis paper must contain content that is solely the student’s original work
and not from a previous assignment. Any brief quotations or concepts from outside
sources must be properly attributed:
Content that is NOT solely the student’s original work, is from a previous assignment,
and DOES NOT attribute work from outside sources is considered plagiarism.
Submission of plagiarized work will result in a ZERO for the assignment and no credit
given for successfully completed extra credit assignments, with participation in future
extra credit opportunities being blocked. Other possible penalties are the designation of a
“F” or “FF” for the course.
3.) A word count must be provided either in the heading or at the end of the paper
and be accurate:
Analysis papers with falsified word counts, especially actual word counts that are well
below the word count provided, will result in a ZERO for the assignment.
4.) The minimum word count for the assignment is 1,250 words.
5.) Your introductory paragraph should include the name of the chosen film, its
director, and the year it was made.
6.) The introductory paragraph is one succinct paragraph that sets up a single pivotal
sequence for readers by explaining context (i.e. a very brief overview of the film, where
the selected sequence occurs in the movie, and why the scene is so impactful) and
essential characters who are in the sequence.
7.) The introductory paragraph must also include a clear and effective thesis statement
that is underlined.
8.) A brief summary paragraph that provides an overview of the action of the
sequence that provides important background information relevant to the analysis
9.) The body of the paper must be a formal analysis of how 3 specific tools of cinema
and/or aspects of mise-en-scene were used to forward the narrative of the chosen
sequence with strong topic sentences:
Failure to examine a single pivotal sequence from a formal perspective in the analysis
paper, including tools used by the director to elicit a response from the audience were
identified and interpreted in an academic manner, will result in a ZERO for this set of
10.) A satisfying concluding paragraph must be included
11.) Paper must be written and formatted in MLA-style format
12.) The writing style of the paper must be clear and free of spelling and grammatical
Please review the rubric for Film Analysis Paper #1 and make sure to satisfy all the
requirements. I also highly recommend checking out the checklist, “Tips for Success”, “Quick
and Dirty Guidelines” handouts provided in the “Important Documents: Film Analysis Paper #1”
module, as well as the materials in the “Important Documents: Helpful Writing Resources”
module for further guidance.
One of the most important required components for a successful paper is a clear and
effective thesis statement (which is required to be underlined). I expect to see a thesis
statement that identifies what the filmmakers are trying to achieve with the scene in question,
which tools of cinema and/or aspects of mise-en-scene were used to achieve their desired effect,
and to what extent they were successful. By the way, for a paper of this size, you should analyze
three tools of cinema and/or aspects of mise-en-scene.
Tools of cinema are important film components such as script, cinematography, editing, sound,
and mise-en-scene. Please be aware (double-check your text book for more information) that
mise-en-scene is an umbrella term covering a variety of aspects seen on-screen – including
costuming, hair and makeup, sets and setting, lighting, acting style, etc. Therefore, do not simply
put down mise-en-scene as one of the tools that will be analyzed, be more specific. Generally, it
is recommended to treat one aspect of mise-en-scene as the equivalent of another tool of cinema
(e.g. if choosing to analyze three cinematic tools, selecting cinematography, lighting, and
editing). Remember to reinforce your thesis by doing an in-depth analysis regarding the use of
various tools of cinema and aspects of mise-en-scene in your selected scene.
All assignments must be turned in by the deadline. Late work will NOT be accepted, which
will result in a ZERO for the assignment. If you suspect that there is a problem with your
submission properly uploading to CANVAS, send me an email (with the correct file attached)
BEFORE the 11:59 p.m. (EST) deadline on the assigned due date. Emails and assignments
received after the deadline will not be accepted.
Finally, any work that is received by the deadline, regardless of whether it is an incorrect
or incomplete file, will be what it is graded. Therefore, I cannot stress enough the
importance of making certain that the correct and complete file has been fully uploaded.
Double-check, even triple-check, to make sure that your assignment is properly submitted
and populating the correct forum or submission module.
