Living with parents versus living with room-mates
Knowing where to live and whom to live with is a vital question that every human being
has to provide an answer to in a particular stage of life. External rather than internal factors
highly influence this choice in that nothing is left to chance.
Options we are presented with are whether to live with our parents or with a bunch of
friends or at times one person.
This is the main dilemma of our transition from childhood to adulthood that kicks off
mostly when we begin our university journeys. The verdict we make will affect our future both
positively and negatively. We can choose to stay with our parents and forfeit the option of
staying with a friend or vice versa.
The most striking fact about living away from parents is that one gets to enjoy privacy.
One can decide to work from home or even relax without disturbance. Living with parents is not
so bad either since one gets the cozy feeling of being at home. There’s a big chance the house is
probably the one you grew up in, and you are familiar with the neighborhood. A family is always
better than anything.
Staying with a friend or friends can enable one to save money due to consistent budgeting
rather than provide for everyone if one was at home with parents. This teaches a critical factor in
becoming wealth which is being as frugal as possible. Staying with parents can save you money.
One can save money that would have been rent expenditure. You will be able to save utility bill
money, grocery money, and more.
Live by your own rules is a cliché nowadays for anyone who decides to live anywhere
outside the parent’s residence. There’s none to control you but your principles, one can choose to
do whatever he or she likes when living with a friend or a group of friends. Hospitality levels at
home are much higher than anywhere; one can benefit from this while living with parents. You
will be cooked for, and your laundry will be done and probably your bed which does not sound
Years of staying with parents get to the point that feels like you are in prison due to the
tough rules that are laid in that jurisdiction. Having the opportunity to get out feels great.
Freedom is a gift that nothing can buy. This provides an opportunity to be responsible within our
own set of rules. Staying with parents can be of help, especially if one has kids. The family could
take care of the kids, thus relieving the burden that would have been there if one was staying out
with a bunch of friends.
Living with a roommate or roommates can be an exciting adventure when it comes to
peer to peer advice. We tend to feel comfortable explaining our misfortunes to our friends as we
grow up. Living with parents can help too due to the immense amounts of experience that our
parents have.
Living with a roommate or roommates, just like anything has its demerits. Friends tend to
be around when it’s beneficial. Life has problems that sort out our group of friends, but this

sometimes becomes a hard pill to swallow since sometimes we are left with no one to help
during these harsh times—staying at home can be a problem too due to unwelcome advice from
people even when you don’t need them. Advice on what time to sleep or what to eat can be
irritating to an adult.
Staying with roommates can bring up privacy issues. One might want to relax after a long
week of work, but a house party might be on the way since the premises are shared. Staying with
parents brings about lots of privacy issues too. This can bring about psychological burdens. No
longer will you have the freedom to do what you want at any time of the day or night.
Security away from home is not as great. Not all friends can be trusted especially if you
are staying with roommates. Friends can harm you even if it’s indirectly. The problem with
staying at home with your parents can cause potential fallout. Since there is a generational gap
between you and your parents, you can’t expect them to think or behave like you. They will talk
and walk in the same way as they always have (Krishna Reddy 2019). But being so close will
exacerbate and highlight your differences. Keep in mind that you have to compromise most
things to maintain peace.
Life sometimes becomes boring when living with roommates. Due to differences in culture or
sometimes beliefs, living with friends denies us the chance to enjoy deeper connections that
we’ve created with our families. Staying with parents can deprive you of simple life pleasures
like throwing a party. You have to live by the rules of the head of the house.
Living with roommates can corrupt good morals due to the influence of peer pressure. So
many people started using drugs and engaging in immoral deeds due to the effect of friends.
Staying with parents can encourage laziness. Since everything is provided for there’s no need to
look for more. This becomes the mentality with time.

In conclusion, although there’s no better choice between staying with parents or with a
roommate or roommates, there’s enough evidence to prove that each choice has its setbacks.
Whatever choice you make, you must first access the merits and demerits without considering
people’s expectations.
