EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
– do this last to highlight the key conclusions and recommendations. Needs to be exactly ½ page long.

SECTION 1 TOPIC OVERVIEW
The supply chain of wholesale coffee will be presented in five significant steps; planning,
sourcing, production, delivery, and returns, including the challenges to accomplish the goal. The
overall supply chain of coffee is complex and ripe with issues. There are growers, intermediaries,
processors, governance, exporters, dealers or brokers, roasters, and retailers involved with our
delicious coffee beans’ journey.

SECTION 2. RECOMMENDATIONS AND CONCLUSIONS
Growing and processing the coffee starts with picking the coffee cherries or beans from
the tree, picking, drying, hulling, sorting, packing, bulking, blending, and finally roasting. Coffee
grows best in affectionately named the coffee-belt between the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn
at about 77 degrees Fahrenheit. A coffee tree takes seven to ten years to produce its first crop.
(Severins) Brazil is the top producer of coffee in the world.
After the beans have dried, they are stored in large mesh sacks and passed onto the
exporters. Exporters distribute to large corporations that do industrial roasting. The roasted
inventory is transported to retailers through an elaborate transportation system. (Chan)
The significant issues and challenges of this particular supply chain are complex and vast.
Power, governance, sustainability, stakeholder relationships, systematic problems with quality,
poverty, food insecurity, and specialty coffee scarcity.
Power imbalances and governance create particular dynamics specific to a coffee supply
chain. The power could be adjusted by creating a collaborative approach to the supply chain. The
government could facilitate this adjustment of power. Studies have been performed and conclude
that the collaborative governance approach increased social responsibility and sustainability.
(Lukas)
The supply chain is entirely dependant upon stakeholder relationships, which can be
strengthened by the government regulations adjusting the power. Adjusted power would look
like better communication, collaboration, and transparency. Currently, the trust is not there in
these vital stakeholder relationships. Trust must be earned and developed.

“As noted earlier, the opportunity to improve Fair Trade through stronger governance and
increased power for the producer groups of the supply chain would increase communication and
collaboration amongst supply chain stakeholders, and these developments would foster
improvements to the program and drive efficiencies between the supply chain actors.” (Lukas)
The proper milling and processing mainly determine coffee quality. Access to milling
and processing equipment is expensive, and not all coffee cherry producers have this equipment
on hand. The millers have more power than the growers. Growers without this equipment use a
common miller.
Poverty, food insecurity has directly impacted the farmer population. The coffee farmer
population is decreasing and not being replaced by the next generation. Fewer coffee farmers
directly impact the production of specialty coffee.
To address these concerns, Keurig has developed an analysis called value mapping.
Value mapping creates knowledge and understanding of the service provided within the supply
chain and the associated cost. Keurig has developed this tool to increase their internal knowledge
management and improve supply chain efficiency.
“For Keurig, value mapping takes two forms: either as a tool to better understand an
individual negotiation or used more broadly to understand a particular origin’s supply chain.”
